Fragmentation and Data Allocation in the Distributed Environments

Nicoleta Iacob (Ciobanu)

Abstract

The distributed data processing is an effective way to improvereliability, availability and performance of a database system. Inthis paper we will concentrate on data allocation problem with theaim to assure an optimal distribution of data in the process ofthe distributed database design in correlation with datafragmentation. Efficient allocation of fragments requires abalance between costs (storage, processing and transmission ofdata), performance (especially response time) and datadistribution restrictions. The allocation of fragments is closelyrelated to the replication of data from distributed databases. Inaddition, we analyzed the cost of fragmentation and replication.
